12.07.07 Scientific report says it is time to stop primate experiments
A new report from Animal Defenders International, the National Anti-Vivisection Society, and Lord Dowding Fund for Humane Research is launched at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The report dissects the arguments presented in defence of research on primates and, citing 100 scientific references, concludes it’s time the monkey business stopped.
The European Union’s Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) produced a scientific opinion paper in 2002 on the use of non-human primates (NHP) in biomedical research. This paper made a series of statements about scientific research on NHP, and it has informed the EU’s decision-making process on the matter.
The ADI report addresses each of the statements made by the SSC, discusses current scientific opinion on the issues raised, and the scientific basis for adopting non-animal alternatives in biomedical research.
